The Irish state broadcaster RTÉ has announced it will not participate in the 2026 Eurovision Song Contest if Israel takes part. RTÉ stated thatIreland’s involvement in the event “would be unconscionable given the ongoing and appalling loss of lives in Gaza.” Ireland has a history in the contest, having won seven times since its inception, with its last victory occurring in 1996.
The final decision regarding Ireland’s participation will be contingent on the European Broadcasting Union’s (EBU) rulings. The 2026 Eurovision contest is scheduled to be held in May in Vienna. In addition to RTÉ, Slovenia’s national broadcaster RTVSLO has also indicated it will withdraw if Israel is involved. Spain’s Culture Minister, Ernest Urtasun, mentioned that Spain might also opt out depending on Israel’s participation.
In its statement, RTÉ expressed concern about the targeting of journalists in Gaza, the restrictions on media access in the region, and the situation of hostages. Prior to the most recent Eurovision contest in May, RTÉ approached the EBU to discuss Israel’s participation in the event. Kevin Bakhurst, the director general of RTÉ, acknowledged the dire impact of the conflict on civilians and the plight of both Gazan citizens and Israeli hostages, emphasizing the importance of maintaining objectivity in coverage of the war.
This year, over 70 former Eurovision contestants signed a letter urging the EBU to prevent Israel from participating in the upcoming competition. The unfolding events surrounding the conflict in Gaza and their implications for cultural events like Eurovision have raised significant discussions in various broadcasting circles.
