Israeli authorities have ordered residents of Gaza City to evacuate as military operations aim to take control of the northern Gaza Strip. Ongoing airstrikes have targeted high-rise buildings in the city, with Israeli forces claiming operational control of approximately 40% of Gaza City. Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu indicated that around 100,000 individuals have left the area, but nearly a million residents remain, many in temporary shelters. Some residents have expressed their determination to stay despite the danger.
Local resident Ammar Sukkar addressed the situation emphatically, criticizing the leadership of Hamas while asserting his right to remain in Gaza City. He claimed that even after a recent airstrike damaged nearby buildings, he would not leave his land. Another resident, Wael Shaban, recounted the short notice given to evacuate before a strike, highlighting financial barriers that prevent many from relocating south.
Although Israel’s military contends that southern “humanitarian zones” provide sufficient resources, aid organizations are noting that these regions are overcrowded and lack adequate supplies. The International Committee of the Red Cross has deemed the proposed mass evacuation “unfeasible” due to current conditions across Gaza.
As part of its military efforts, Israel is establishing a new aid distribution site in Rafah and has announced plans to provide additional resources, including tents and water pipelines. Access for journalists to Gaza remains limited. Recent military embeds allowed the BBC to observe the situation, marking the first entry since December 2023.
Military officials acknowledge the lessons learned from past operations, but some residents doubt safety in designated zones. The ongoing conflict has heightened pressure on Israeli leaders, with families of hostages urging caution amid fears for loved ones still in the city. Netanyahu continues to pursue military action, insisting that further operations are necessary to defeat Hamas.
