Jaguar Land Rover (JLR) has confirmed that hackers may have taken some data during a cyber-attack that has disrupted car production and resulted in employees being sent home. Initially, the company, which is owned by Tata Motors of India, expressed confidence that no customer information had been compromised. However, 11 days after the incident, JLR acknowledged that some data had been affected, though it did not specify whether this involved customer, supplier, or company data.
Production at JLR’s UK facilities, including Solihull, Halewood, and Wolverhampton, has been halted since the previous week, and the sites are not expected to resume operations until at least Thursday. This disruption has led to a global production stoppage of approximately 1,000 vehicles per day. A group named Scattered Lapsus$ Hunters has claimed responsibility for the hack, adding to their history of attacks on UK retailers, including M&S.
The UK’s Information Commissioner’s Office stated that JLR has reported the incident as required. In a recent statement, JLR noted that it is informing relevant regulators and continuing its forensic investigation. The company indicated that it would contact affected individuals if their data was compromised.
Ciaran Martin, a professor at Oxford University and a former head of the National Cyber Security Centre, commented on the situation, emphasizing the importance of continuity in operations for JLR compared to merely protecting data. He drew a parallel between data breaches and more serious operational disruptions. JLR has temporarily shut down its IT networks in response to the attack, stating that restarting these systems is a complex process. The National Cyber Security Centre is providing assistance, while new Business Minister Chris Bryant mentioned that the government is in daily communication with JLR to address the challenges it faces. Local MPs have also been invited for a question-and-answer session with the company.
