A charity has donated approximately £3,000 worth of school uniforms to assist families facing financial difficulties in Peterborough. The uniforms, provided by Family Voice Peterborough (FVP), will be available free of charge for parents and caregivers at the Ortongate Sports Bar from 12:00 to 13:00 BST on Wednesday.
Louise Ravenscroft from FVP noted an increasing number of families struggling due to the rising cost of living. She emphasized the charity’s goal of alleviating expenses for those in need. Kirsty Knight, an independent city councillor for Orton Waterville, is involved in organizing this event and expressed gratitude to the charity for their support, highlighting its potential positive impact on the local community.
Knight, a mother of three, conveyed her understanding of the financial burdens many families face regarding school uniforms, particularly given the current economic climate. She acknowledged the generosity of Lloyd, the owner of Ortongate Sports Bar, for providing the venue for the initiative. Knight encouraged parents in need to take advantage of the opportunity.
FVP aims to enhance support for children and young individuals with disabilities or additional needs. Ravenscroft mentioned that the organization is currently assisting around 30 families with special educational needs every month, with requests for support steadily increasing.
Concerns about poverty, particularly among families with children requiring special support, have led to heightened demand for food and financial assistance. As such, FVP is committed to finding ways to ease the financial strain on these households.
This initiative follows a recent uniform swap event organized by Peterborough’s Youth MP, Danielle Daboh, which also aimed to support parents preparing for the upcoming school year. The combination of such community efforts highlights a concerted response to the challenges many families are facing.
