Israel has issued an evacuation warning for approximately one million residents of Gaza City as it prepares for a significant ground offensive. The Israel Defense Forces (IDF) advised that remaining in the area could be hazardous. Netanyahu characterized recent airstrikes that hit high-rise buildings as the start of an intensive military operation targeting Hamas’s last stronghold.
Hamas responded to Netanyahu’s statements, claiming they represented a “crime of forced displacement.” The planned military actions have drawn international criticism, particularly from the United Nations, which cautioned that intensifying operations in an area already facing a declared famine would exacerbate civilian suffering.
The IDF’s directive was conveyed through leaflets and social media, urging residents to evacuate from various neighborhoods in Gaza City. The Israeli security cabinet approved a strategy to gain control of Gaza following failed negotiations with Hamas regarding a ceasefire and hostage release. There are currently 48 hostages believed to be held by Hamas, 20 of whom are reportedly alive.
Amidst intensified air and ground assaults, the IDF has claimed responsibility for the destruction of at least 50 high-rise buildings in the past days. According to various sources, footage showed some civilians fleeing southward, though many are hesitant to leave due to a lack of safe destinations or suitable transportation.
Humanitarian agencies have highlighted that many families face difficulties in relocating because of financial constraints and logistical challenges. Since August 14, over 97,000 individuals have been displaced, with only around 50,000 observed moving south as instructed by the IDF.
The UN has expressed concerns regarding the crowded conditions in designated humanitarian areas, which have also been targeted by airstrikes. Aid availability has been limited, raising alarms over food shortages and worsening living conditions. UN officials have emphasized the urgent need for humanitarian supplies to prevent famine from spreading further into Gaza.
