OpenAI comes for Hollywood with Critterz, an AI-powered animated film

OpenAI is investing in an animated feature film titled “Critterz,” aiming to demonstrate the potential of generative artificial intelligence in film production. The project is reported by the Wall Street Journal to be in development, with plans for a 2026 release following a debut at the Cannes Film Festival.

The film will primarily utilize OpenAI’s AI tools, including its flagship model, GPT-5, which has recently faced scrutiny regarding its performance. “Critterz” is being produced with a budget of under $30 million and is expected to be completed in just nine months, a significantly shorter timeline and lower budget compared to typical animated films.

OpenAI is collaborating with Native Foreign and Vertigo Films, based in Los Angeles and London, respectively. The initiative aims to persuade Hollywood executives to invest more in AI-driven projects, though challenges remain. The film industry currently grapples with slow adoption of AI technologies, resistance from industry talent and audiences, and ongoing debates over intellectual property rights and creative roles in production.

This project highlights the ongoing intersection of technology and creative sectors, raising questions about the future of animation and AI’s role in filmmaking.
