London tube users warned to plan for disruption as strike action escalates | London Underground

Tube passengers are advised to verify services before traveling this week due to escalating staff strikes, which will result in an early end to operations on Sunday evening and a complete closure of the London Underground for four days starting Monday. The RMT union, representing around 10,000 workers, has rejected requests to suspend the strikes, which are aimed at negotiating a shorter workweek amid ongoing pay discussions.

Service disruptions will persist with limited tube trains expected to run until Friday, potentially leading to increased congestion and crowding on other forms of transportation in London. While the Elizabeth Line, London Overground, and National Rail services will remain operational, some central rail stations that serve as tube interchanges will be closed. Transport for London (TfL) anticipates that the most significant impact will be felt from Tuesday onward, coinciding with the return of midweek commuting.

Additionally, the Docklands Light Railway will not be in service on Tuesday and Thursday due to strikes from a separate dispute. In a previous attempt to resolve the matter, TfL made an appeal to the RMT union on Friday to reconsider the strike plans, proposing a pay increase of 3.4% that the union was encouraged to present to its members. However, TfL noted that it could not accommodate the RMT’s demands regarding a reduced workweek, which is currently set at 35 hours.

While members of the Aslef train drivers union are not participating in these strikes, the economic repercussions of the labor actions could exceed £230 million, according to estimates from the Centre for Economics and Business Research. The current series of strikes began Friday night and will include various staff categories throughout the week, halting underground services until 8 a.m. on Friday, September 12.
