Crowds flock to Vatican as teenager made first millennial saint

Pope Leo canonised Carlo Acutis on Sunday during a ceremony in Rome attended by thousands. Acutis, an Italian boy originally from London, passed away from leukaemia in 2006 at the age of 15. He is recognized as “the patron saint of the internet” due to his initiatives in documenting miracles online and managing websites for various Catholic organizations.

A portrait of Carlo Acutis was displayed in Saint Peter’s Square as Pope Leo highlighted the young man’s strong faith. Alongside Acutis, Pier Giorgio Frassati, an Italian known for his love of mountaineering and dedication to serving the less fortunate, was also canonised. Frassati died in 1925.

The canonisation of these individuals raises questions about the criteria and significance of sainthood in contemporary spirituality and society.
