Microsoft Azure services disrupted by Red Sea cable cuts

Microsoft has reported disruptions to its Azure cloud services due to undersea cable cuts in the Red Sea. The company indicated that users of Azure may experience delays as a result of these issues impacting internet traffic in the Middle East. Azure is considered one of the leading cloud computing platforms globally.

While Microsoft did not specify the cause of the cable cuts, it mentioned having redirected traffic through alternative routes. An update from Microsoft’s website highlighted that Azure traffic through the Middle East could encounter increased latency due to these undersea fiber cuts, although traffic not traversing the region remains unaffected.

Several reports indicate that the issues with undersea cables may also extend to the United Arab Emirates and other Asian countries. NetBlocks, an organization that monitors internet connectivity, noted that the cuts have impacted internet services in nations including India and Pakistan. The Pakistan Telecommunication Company reported that the cable disruptions occurred in waters near Jeddah, warning users that internet services might be affected during peak periods.

The disruptions in the Red Sea are not isolated incidents. In February 2024, multiple communication cables were severed, affecting data transmission between Asia and Europe. This event followed a warning from Yemen’s government about potential sabotage by the Iran-backed Houthi movement, which the Houthis have denied. Additionally, in the Baltic Sea, a series of undersea cable and gas pipeline damages have been linked to suspected attacks coinciding with geopolitical tensions following Russia’s invasion of Ukraine. The seizure of a ship by Swedish authorities earlier this year, suspected of damaging a cable, has raised concerns about sabotage in the region.
