Recognition of Palestinian state is ‘disastrous’, US ambassador says

Mike Huckabee, the United States Ambassador to Israel, expressed to the BBC that plans to recognize a Palestinian state have resulted in “disastrous consequences.” Meanwhile, UK Prime Minister Sir Keir Starmer announced intentions to recognize a Palestinian state in September, contingent on specific conditions. These conditions include Israel’s agreement to a ceasefire in Gaza and the revival of negotiations aimed at a two-state solution.

Several other countries, including Australia, France, Japan, and Canada, have also indicated their support for recognizing a Palestinian state. In response, the Israeli government has criticized such recognition, claiming it would reward Hamas for its acts of terrorism and asserting that there is currently “no [Palestinian] partner for peace.”

At present, the State of Palestine is recognized by 147 of the 193 United Nations member states. Should the UK, France, and Canada proceed with recognition, they would become the first G7 countries to officially acknowledge a Palestinian state.
