Director Behind Viral Film ‘Milk & Serial’ Wants to Give You a New ‘Obsession’

A year after releasing his low-budget feature-length slasher film Milk & Serial for $800 on YouTube, which garnered over two million views, filmmaker Curry Barker is set to debut his new film Obsession at the Toronto Film Festival. The film will be featured in the festival’s Midnight Madness section.

Obsession follows a character named Bear, portrayed by Michael Johnston, who engages with supernatural forces to win the attention of his friend Nikki, played by Inde Navarrette. However, the situation spirals out of control. Barker drew inspiration for Obsession from a The Simpsons episode involving chaos caused by a monkey paw.

Producer James Harris, known for films like Fall and 47 Meters Down, collaborated with Barker to elevate the production quality from his previous work. Barker noted the benefits of having a larger budget and the opportunity to create a custom set for the film.

Alongside Obsession, Barker is preparing for another project titled Anything But Ghosts, which involves prominent horror producers Jason Blum and Roy Lee. This upcoming film is described as revolving around con artists posing as ghost hunters.

  • Why it matters: Independent filmmakers can find opportunities to create and showcase their work at major festivals, highlighting potential avenues for new talent and innovative stories.
  • The latest: Barker’s upcoming project Anything But Ghosts, featuring established producers, signals a significant step in his career following the success of his previous films.
