The South Korean government has convened an emergency meeting in response to the detention of 475 individuals, primarily South Korean nationals, during a large-scale immigration raid at a Hyundai battery plant in Georgia, USA. Officials have stated that the detainees were found to be illegally working at the facility, which is a significant foreign investment in the region. In light of the situation, South Korea has deployed diplomats to the site, while LG Energy Solution, a partner in the plant’s operation, announced a suspension of most business trips to the US.
U.S. authorities, including Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE), conducted the raid, asserting that the operation was essential for protecting American jobs and addressing illegal employment. President Donald Trump defended the actions taken by ICE, emphasizing their mandate in enforcing immigration laws. Video footage released by ICE depicted several workers in restraint, some wearing garments associated with Hyundai and LG CNS.
Concerns about the timing of the raid have emerged, particularly as South Korea and the U.S. are engaged in ongoing trade discussions. The South Korean Foreign Minister, Cho Hyun, expressed a strong sense of responsibility regarding the detentions and announced the establishment of a dedicated team to address the matter. He indicated that he may travel to Washington if necessary.
In response to the arrests, LG Energy Solution has sent its Chief Human Resources Officer to the Georgia facility and is taking measures to facilitate the release of those detained. The company has also initiated support for the detainees’ families by ensuring access to necessary medications and has instructed employees to return to South Korea.
The factory, recognized as a major economic development project, employs 1,200 people and produces electric vehicles. The detained workers are currently being held in a facility until their future status is decided by ICE.
