‘Strange noises’ heard before squatter found living in house with lights, TV and bed

Authorities discovered a man living in the crawl space of a home near Portland, Oregon, without the owner’s knowledge. According to the Clackamas County Sheriff’s Office, the individual had been residing in the space for a considerable period, equipping it with a bed and lighting.

The homeowner had reported hearing “strange noises” emanating from the crawl space and confirmed to deputies that no one was supposed to be living there. The investigation began shortly before 11:00 PM local time on a Wednesday when deputies responded to a call regarding suspicious activity in a residential area near Happy Valley, southeast of Portland.

A witness reported seeing an unfamiliar man parking a car and heading toward the rear of the property. This individual also noticed the crawl space door open and observed light coming from within. Upon arriving, deputies noted signs of forced entry, including a damaged door, and discovered an extension cord running through a vent.

After confirming with the homeowner that no one should be present, the deputies attempted to use the owner’s keys to open the door. When these efforts failed, they forced the door open and found 40-year-old Beniamin Bucur inside. The sheriff’s office stated that Bucur was “obviously living inside,” as the space contained various electrical appliances such as chargers, a television, and lights, along with a bed.

During the search, law enforcement discovered a methamphetamine pipe. Bucur was subsequently arrested and charged with burglary and unlawful possession of methamphetamine. He has been booked into jail with a bail set at $75,000.
