First look: Dyson’s Spot+Scrub Ai robot seeks out stains

The Dyson Spot+Scrub Ai Robot, announced at the IFA tech show in Berlin, represents Dyson’s initial foray into a combined robot vacuum and mop. This product follows the 2023 release of the 360 VisNav robot vacuum. The Spot+Scrub features a circular design with a self-cleaning roller mop, lidar navigation, and a multifunctional dock. The integration of AI aims to enhance its cleaning capabilities.

A notable feature of the Spot+Scrub is its AI-powered stain detection. When its cameras detect stains, the robot can assess the type of stain and clean it until removed, using green lasers to improve visibility. This approach seeks to resolve a commonly acknowledged shortfall of robotic mops in effectively tackling difficult stains. Competitors like Narwal, iRobot, and Ecovacs also provide similar features, raising questions about the Spot+Scrub’s claimed superiority.

James Dyson, the founder, commented that many existing robot mops leave stains behind and suggested that the Spot+Scrub’s ability to locate and return to stains makes it a better option. The robot also identifies obstacles like cables to avoid entanglement and utilizes lidar instead of a camera-based navigation system, potentially enhancing its efficacy in navigating spaces.

The Spot+Scrub is larger than its predecessor, the VisNav, and has an 18,000 Pa suction power that adjusts according to the surface being cleaned. It employs a long microfiber roller mop for wet cleaning and is designed to prevent carpet dampness by raising the mop when on rugs. While pricing details remain undisclosed, the launch is anticipated in China later this year, followed by the US in 2026.

Users can operate the robot through the revamped MyDyson app, which provides real-time cleaning updates and allows scheduling and cleaning mode selection. Planned features include Matter support for smart home integration, enabling voice control through platforms like Apple Home and Google Home.
