CrossCountry train drivers, represented by the Aslef union, are set to strike on 3 October due to concerns that the company has not adhered to agreed disciplinary and grievance processes. In addition, Aslef members will decline to work non-contractual overtime starting 21 September. The union cites a “persistent refusal” by CrossCountry to follow established procedures for disciplinary actions.
This strike follows previous industrial action by RMT union members during the last August bank holiday weekend, which centered on allegations that CrossCountry had not honored agreements related to staffing, safety, and pay. CrossCountry has expressed disappointment regarding Aslef’s announcement and stated its commitment to reaching an agreement.
CrossCountry operates a network that spans the UK, connecting major cities such as Birmingham, Edinburgh, Bristol, Leeds, Sheffield, Newcastle, and Manchester, from locations like Aberdeen to Penzance and Stansted to Cardiff.
Aslef’s district organizer, Andy Hourigan, remarked that the ongoing dispute with the company has been protracted, alleging that CrossCountry frequently breaches agreements, arrangements, and procedures, particularly regarding disciplinary and grievance issues. While he criticized the company for misinterpreting union terms, he also indicated the union’s willingness to engage in discussions aimed at resolving the conflict.
Aslef’s voting results revealed significant support for the planned actions, with over 80% of its 632 members participating; nearly 90% voted in favor of strikes, and 96% supported other forms of industrial action. Aslef General Secretary Mick Whelan emphasized the importance of honoring agreements, citing poor management practices as the reasons behind the strike. In response, CrossCountry’s managing director, Shiona Rolfe, reiterated the company’s desire to resolve the situation and avoid disruption for passengers, indicating a readiness to continue negotiations.
