HYDERABAD: The city of Hyderabad has experienced a significant increase in viral fever cases over the past two months, attributed to recent heavy rains and elevated humidity levels.
Common symptoms reported include cold, cough, fever, body aches, joint pain, and nausea. The Fever Hospital recorded over 20,400 out-patient (OP) cases in August, averaging 700 patients per day. This marks an increase from around 13,200 OP cases in July. Hospital admissions rose to 498 in August, including 29 cases of dengue, compared to 244 admissions in July.
Dr. Rajendra Prasad, the superintendent of Fever Hospital, noted a significant rise in viral and flu cases in August, indicating that numbers may further rise with ongoing weather changes and humidity. To address the growing patient numbers, the hospital has increased its medical unit deployment from one to three, with 13 to 15 doctors on duty daily. Dr. Prasad confirmed that the hospital has adequate staff, medications, and support facilities in place.
Healthcare professionals are advising vaccination against influenza for those in vulnerable groups.
- Why it matters: Increased viral fever cases can strain healthcare resources and highlight the importance of preventive measures like vaccinations for vulnerable populations.
- As humidity levels and weather continue to change, understanding these trends can help local businesses prepare for potential increases in healthcare-related demand.
- The latest: The Fever Hospital has expanded its medical resources and staff to accommodate the rising patient numbers.
