Russian President Vladimir Putin met with North Korean leader Kim Jong Un in Beijing, marking their third meeting in two years. During the meeting, which took place as China hosted one of its largest military parades celebrating the 80th anniversary of the end of World War II in Asia, Putin expressed gratitude for the efforts of North Korean soldiers fighting alongside Russian forces in Ukraine. Kim responded that he was willing to assist Russia in its endeavors.
Putin highlighted the strong bilateral relations between the two nations and noted that North Korean troops had significantly contributed to military actions in the Kursk region. He acknowledged the sacrifices made by the North Korean armed forces and their families. Kim appreciated Putin’s recognition and stated that the relationship between North Korea and Russia was advancing in various areas, particularly concerning their “joint struggle” in Ukraine.
Reports from South Korea indicate that approximately 15,000 North Korean troops have been deployed to support Russia, along with additional military supplies. In exchange, North Korea is thought to receive food, monetary aid, and technical assistance. These North Korean troops, who lack combat experience, initially underwent training in Russia before taking on supporting roles in the conflict.
Western officials have tracked significant casualties among these troops, estimating at least 1,000 deaths within the first few months of deployment, with further estimates suggesting around 4,700 North Korean casualties overall.
The two leaders’ meeting follows a treaty signed in June, where both nations pledged mutual support in the face of any aggression. Kim reaffirmed his commitment to backing Russia’s actions in Ukraine. Additionally, North Korea has shown intentions to send workers to help recover the war-affected regions in Russia.
