Chinese President Xi Jinping and Russian President Vladimir Putin have commenced bilateral discussions in Beijing, coinciding with an upcoming military parade celebrating the 80th anniversary of Japan’s surrender in World War II.
During the talks, Putin characterized the relationship between the two nations as being at an “unprecedented level,” noting the importance of their close communication in reflecting the strategic essence of Russian-Chinese relations. He expressed pleasure in meeting with Xi again, underlining their continued partnership.
Xi responded by affirming that the China-Russia relationship has proven resilient amid global changes. He expressed a willingness to collaborate with Moscow to enhance what he termed a “more just and reasonable global governance system.”
The military parade, which Xi is set to host, aims to project China’s capabilities both as a significant economic power and an influential player on the diplomatic front, all while navigating challenging international trade relationships exacerbated by U.S. tariffs.
The meeting also occurs in the context of ongoing tensions related to the conflict in Ukraine, with Xi and Putin critiquing Western nations during their discussions. Xi referred to “bullying behavior” from certain countries, implicitly targeting the United States. Meanwhile, Putin defended Russia’s actions in Ukraine, attributing the conflict’s initiation to Western provocations.
The two leaders conducted their meeting at the Great Hall of the People in Beijing, as reported by Chinese state broadcaster CCTV. This dialogue raises questions about the future trajectory of China-Russia ties and their implications for global governance and security dynamics.
