This interaction occurred during the Shanghai Cooperation Organisation summit, where Modi and Putin were seen sharing a friendly demeanor. The backdrop of their meeting is significant, as it arises amid heightened tensions related to U.S. tariffs on Indian goods. The U.S. has implemented a 50% tariff on Indian products, citing concerns over India’s purchases of Russian oil and weapons, which includes a 25% penalty specifically linked to transactions with Russia amid its military actions in Ukraine.
Despite these tariffs, India has demonstrated a continued commitment to its relationship with Russia, which some analysts view as a counter to U.S. influence in the Indo-Pacific region. Historically, the U.S. was India’s primary trading partner, a status that has shifted in light of recent geopolitical dynamics.
Additionally, Putin faces a pressing deadline set by U.S. President Donald Trump regarding peace talks with Ukraine’s President Volodymyr Zelensky. While Putin acknowledged the importance of collaboration with China and India in addressing the Ukrainian crisis, he has stated that there are currently no plans for direct dialogue with Zelensky.
In remarks made during the summit, Putin referenced earlier discussions with Trump, expressing hope for progress toward peace in Ukraine. The ongoing conflict, which began with Russia’s invasion in February 2022, continues to escalate despite international pressure and ultimatums from U.S. leadership.
