Peterborough rough sleeper centre to offer women-only sessions

Light Project Peterborough (LLP), a charity focused on supporting homeless individuals, is set to launch weekly women-only sessions aimed at creating a “safe and comfortable environment.” This initiative will take place at The Garden House, a day center located in Peterborough, which provides respite and advice to rough sleepers.

Approximately 20% of the individuals served by the charity are women, with reports indicating an increase in female visitors over the past two years. Services manager Paddy Berryman noted that many vulnerable women at The Garden House have expressed feelings of intimidation due to the presence of men. He emphasized the importance of providing a space where women can seek help without fear of judgment or anxiety stemming from past trauma.

The new women-only sessions will feature female volunteers who can provide support and advice. Berryman stated that the charity is committed to helping women engage with services that can assist them moving forward. In addition to these sessions, The Garden House offers healthcare support, housing assistance, and access to shower facilities.

According to Peterborough City Council’s recent homelessness report, there were 24 rough sleepers counted in the city in 2023. LLP has experienced increased demand, noting a challenging summer with 110 new individuals attending the center from May to July. Berryman mentioned a spike in supplies given out during this period, including water, sun cream, and ice lollies.

To cope with the growing need, LLP has employed two new project workers. Furthermore, the charity is gearing up for its participation in the Great Eastern Run in Peterborough, aiming to reach a target of 50 runners, with encouragement for additional sign-ups still open.
