Electric cars eligible for £3,750 discount announced

The UK government has announced the first electric vehicles (EVs) eligible for a £3,750 discount under its grant scheme aimed at promoting the adoption of electric cars. As confirmed by the Department for Transport (DfT), the eligible models include the Ford Puma Gen-E and the e-Tourneo Courier, among others.

The grant scheme is intended to encourage consumers to transition from petrol and diesel vehicles to EVs. The discount applies to eligible vehicles priced at up to £37,000, with the most environmentally friendly options receiving higher discounts. In total, an additional 26 models qualify for a £1,500 discount.

Manufacturers can apply for grant eligibility for their EV models, which results in an automatic discount at the point of sale for buyers. The DfT has indicated that more vehicle models are anticipated to be approved soon, aiming to reduce prices of EVs to be comparable with those of petrol and diesel vehicles.

The UK government plans to prohibit the sale of new fully petrol or diesel cars by 2030. Nonetheless, many potential EV buyers cite the high upfront cost as a significant barrier to purchase, and there are concerns regarding the availability of charging stations across the UK. Currently, there are approximately 1.3 million electric cars on the road but only around 82,000 public charging points.

The grant initiative will be funded through a £650 million scheme available over three years. According to Autotrader, the average price of a new battery electric car was £49,790 in June 2025, significantly higher than the average price of £34,225 for petrol cars. The initiative aims to alleviate some financial pressure for families considering the switch to electric vehicles.
