Former boxer Tommy Coyle is scheduled to distribute free school uniforms in Hull later today. Coyle, a former Commonwealth lightweight champion, initiated this annual event during the Covid-19 pandemic to assist families facing financial challenges during back-to-school season.
The uniform giveaway will take place at his gym, TC60, on Humber Street, from 11:00 to 13:00 BST. Since retiring from boxing in 2019, Coyle has established a sporting foundation and has been involved in various initiatives aimed at supporting underprivileged children, including setting up a mobile boxing gym.
Coyle noted that the demand for uniforms has increased each year since the event’s inception. Last year, he mentioned making multiple trips to local retailers such as Asda and Morrisons to meet the growing needs, with expenditures nearing £30,000 on uniforms alone.
In response to issues in 2024, including some individuals taking more uniforms than necessary and attempting to resell them online, Coyle introduced new measures. He reported that instances of uniforms being resold on platforms like Facebook prompted the changes. This year, the process has been adjusted, with attendees required to present a ticket that specifies the number of children they have. Each child is eligible to receive one complete school uniform.
Supporting this initiative are various local businesses, including MKM, Cranswick, and Transwaste Recycling. In recognition of his charitable work addressing child poverty and youth violence, Coyle was awarded the Freedom of the City of Hull in July.
