Kpop Demon Hunters becomes Netflix’s most viewed film ever

The animated musical KPop Demon Hunters has achieved significant popularity on Netflix, reportedly becoming the platform’s most viewed movie ever since its release in June. According to Netflix, the film has accumulated over 236 million views, surpassing the previous record held by Red Notice.

Produced by Sony Pictures Animation, the film follows the narrative of a fictional K-pop girl group, Huntr/x, as its three members utilize their music and combat skills to protect humanity from demons. Despite a modest launch event at Netflix’s Tudum theatre in Los Angeles, the film gained traction over the summer through organic word-of-mouth promotion, aided by viral social media content.

The soundtrack of KPop Demon Hunters has also experienced remarkable success, with several songs becoming highly streamed on platforms like Spotify. Notably, the track “Golden” reached number one on the Billboard Hot 100 earlier this month. Additionally, the film’s production team includes industry veterans who have collaborated with well-known K-pop groups, aiming to resonate with K-pop fans.

To capitalize on the popularity of the soundtrack, Netflix released a sing-along version of the film in select countries, which resulted in the film becoming the number one title at the US box office. This version has since expanded globally on the streaming platform.

Songs from the soundtrack have made significant strides on music charts, including Spotify’s global chart, with “Golden” and “Your Idol” by the group’s rivals, Saja Boys, achieving top rankings. This has led to Huntr/x and Saja Boys being recognized as the highest charting female and male K-pop groups in US Spotify history, exceeding the achievements of renowned acts like BTS and Blackpink. Furthermore, the KPop Demon Hunters soundtrack has uniquely entered four songs into the Billboard Hot 100’s top 10 simultaneously. Current discussions suggest that a sequel may be in the early development stages.
