Israel army chief says captive ‘deal on table’, Israel must take it: Report | Israel-Palestine conflict News

Lieutenant-General Eyal Zamir, Israel’s military chief, reported that a potential deal for the release of captives held by Hamas is currently in consideration. During a visit to the Haifa naval base, Zamir indicated that ongoing military operations in Gaza have created favorable conditions for a potential hostage exchange. He noted that the military offensive, particularly an effort to seize Gaza City, could significantly endanger the lives of the captives.

Zamir stated that the pressures applied by the Israeli military have facilitated a situation conducive to negotiations for the hostages’ release but emphasized that the decision now rests with Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu. His comments align with wider discussions as Israel’s security cabinet prepares to meet regarding a new truce proposal mediated by Qatar and Egypt.

This proposal includes a temporary halt to military operations for 60 days, allowing the entry of humanitarian aid, and suggests an exchange involving half of the 50 Israeli captives for Palestinian prisoners. In contrast to this proposal, Israel continues its military operations aimed at refocusing efforts on Gaza City, which has been deeply affected by humanitarian crises.

Recent reports indicate that approximately 514,000 people in Gaza are experiencing famine, with projections estimating that this number could rise to 641,000 by the end of September. The situation has worsened, as Gaza’s Health Ministry reported additional deaths related to malnutrition. The recent violence has also seen Israel conduct airstrikes in Khan Younis, resulting in casualties, including journalists.

Since the onset of military action in October 2023, Israel’s actions have reportedly resulted in over 62,000 Palestinian fatalities, amid ongoing criticisms regarding the humanitarian impact of its operations in the region.
