A video showcasing the underground graves of Mughal emperor Shah Jahan and his queen Mumtaz Mahal at the Taj Mahal in Agra has again gained traction on social media. The one-minute clip features a descent into the basement chamber where the original graves are located, accompanied by the classic song “Jo Vaada Kiya Woh Nibhana Padega” from the 1963 film *Taj Mahal*, which starred Pradeep Kumar and Bina Rai.
According to Prince Bajpai, Senior Conservation Assistant at the Taj Mahal, the footage is not new, having been originally recorded by a CISF officer in 2023 before being shared on Instagram. The Archaeological Survey of India (ASI) previously issued a notice to have it removed. The recent resurgence of the video is attributed to the soundtrack added in the current version.
Bajpai noted that the underground graves are not open year-round to the public; they are accessible only for three days during Shah Jahan’s Urs, marking his death anniversary.
- Why it matters: The popularity of the video highlights ongoing public interest in historical sites and the importance of access to such cultural heritage for educational purposes.
- Engagement with historical content can lead to increased tourism and potential funding for conservation efforts at heritage sites.
- The latest: The video has reignited discussions about the accessibility and preservation of the Taj Mahal’s underground chambers.
