Gaza mother blames famine for halving daughter’s weight

A mother has reported to the BBC that her five-year-old daughter, Lamia Hijjeh, has lost approximately 8.5 kilograms, nearly half of her body weight, due to the ongoing famine in Gaza City. Rida, Lamia’s mother, claims that her daughter is unable to walk as a result of her condition.

On Friday, the Integrated Food Security Phase Classification (IPC) upgraded its classification for the region to Phase 5, which indicates the highest level of acute food insecurity. According to the IPC, famine has been confirmed in the Gaza Governorate, encompassing Gaza City and nearby areas. They also project that “catastrophic conditions” will likely extend to Deir al-Balah and Khan Younis by the end of September.

Israel has responded to these claims, with Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu labeling the IPC report as an “outright lie” and denying that there is starvation occurring in Gaza. This situation has raised questions about the humanitarian conditions in the region and the accuracy of reports regarding food security.

The ongoing conflict has resulted in significant displacement for families like Lamia’s, intensifying the challenges of food access and health for vulnerable populations.
