Microsoft is bringing PC gaming apps and stores to its Xbox app on Windows

Microsoft is currently testing a new feature called “My apps” in its Xbox app for Windows 11, aimed at enhancing the user experience for PC gamers. This feature enables users to quickly install and launch third-party applications, including browsers and gaming utilities, without needing to access the main Microsoft Store.

According to Devin Dhaliwal, a product manager for Xbox experiences, “My apps” is designed as a new tab within the Xbox PC app’s library. It allows users to locate, view, and download third-party applications and popular storefronts, thereby simplifying the process of managing gaming apps. This feature is part of Microsoft’s effort to create an aggregated gaming library, making it easier to find and launch games from various sources.

Previously, Microsoft introduced support for integrating platforms like Steam, Battle.net, and Ubisoft Connect into its Xbox app. The “My apps” feature appears particularly beneficial for handheld PC users, as it provides a streamlined method to navigate applications while minimizing reliance on the traditional Windows desktop interface. Dhaliwal noted that this feature allows players using devices such as the ROG Xbox Ally to navigate between applications more efficiently.

Initial testing of the “My apps” view reveals that it includes entries for Battle.net, Chrome, and GOG Galaxy. Users with Chrome and Battle.net installed can launch these apps directly; however, attempts to download GOG Galaxy through the Xbox interface during testing resulted in installation failures, which may be attributed to the feature still being in beta. This suggests that while the feature shows promise, further refinement may be necessary before full implementation.
