Judge Frank Caprio, viral for courtroom compassion, dies at 88

WASHINGTON: Frank Caprio, a retired U.S. judge renowned for his compassionate approach in court, has passed away at the age of 88. His family announced his death on social media, noting he died peacefully surrounded by loved ones after a long battle with pancreatic cancer.

Caprio served nearly four decades on the bench before retiring in 2023. He was recognized for his lenient handling of minor infractions and his empathetic treatment of defendants. His son, David Caprio, shared the news of his passing in a video on the judge’s Instagram account.

In a recent post from his hospital bed, Caprio had requested prayers following a health setback. He gained prominence through his courtroom reality show “Caught in Providence,” which began in 2000. The show showcased his interactions with defendants and included dismissals of fines for those in need. His popularity on social media grew as millions referred to him as “the nicest judge in the world.”

Caprio authored an autobiography titled “Compassion in the Court: Life-Changing Stories from America’s Nicest Judge.” Born in 1936 in Providence, Rhode Island, he worked various jobs while pursuing a law degree. He eventually became Providence’s municipal court chief judge, serving in that role from 1985 until his retirement.

Rhode Island Governor Dan McKee praised Caprio’s empathy and ordered state flags to be flown at half-staff in his honor. His family described him as not only a respected judge but also a loving husband, father, and friend.
