Ricoh’s GR IV launches in September for a much steeper price than its predecessor

Ricoh will launch its GR IV compact camera in mid-September at a price of $1,499.95. This release will be accompanied by the GF-2 add-on flash, priced at $119.95. The GR IV features a 26-megapixel APS-C sensor, a redesigned 28mm-equivalent f/2.8 lens, improved autofocus and stabilization systems, and 53GB of internal storage in addition to its microSD card slot.

The GR IV follows the introduction of the GR III, which was released over six years ago, with only two variants, the GR IIIx and HDF, becoming available since then. This new model maintains the ultra-compact design suited for street photography and casual shooting.

Comparing the GR IV to Fujifilm’s X100VI, the GR IV is designed to be a more compact option. It has the same size sensor but with a reduced resolution, a wider lens than the X100, a slower f/2.8 aperture, and lacks a built-in viewfinder, relying instead on the rear screen for composition or an external optical finder.

Historically, the GR series has been positioned as a competitively priced alternative, with the GR III debuting under $1,000 in 2019. However, the GR IV’s $1,499.95 price point represents a significant increase of $600 compared to its predecessor and $350 more than the most recent GR III variant.

The price increases for many cameras from various manufacturers, including Fujifilm, Nikon, Canon, and others, have been attributed to US tariffs this year. The Ricoh GR series was previously known for providing a more affordable option among fixed focal-length street cameras. With the GR IV at $1,500 and the X100VI at $1,800—potentially rising further—this market segment is becoming notably more expensive.
