The new manager of the Gloucester Foodbank expressed surprise at the escalating demand for its services. Established in 2005, the foodbank has seen the annual provision of food parcels double over the past five years to exceed 17,000.
Vicky Ranford, the current manager, noted that her understanding of the foodbank’s demand changed significantly upon starting her role. She remarked on the persistent struggles faced by individuals, stating, “I wasn’t really aware just how busy it was and how many people are still struggling.”
Ranford highlighted that although food poverty gained significant public attention during the COVID-19 pandemic, awareness appears to have diminished despite the continuous rise in demand. She pointed out that there remains a stigma regarding the use of foodbanks, with many individuals feeling embarrassed to seek assistance. “People feel embarrassed about it, but the majority of us are only a pay cheque or two away from needing help to buy food or essentials,” she stated. She emphasized the foodbank’s mission: “We make sure people know there’s no shame in it, and the whole purpose of us is to help people.”
In conjunction with the 20th anniversary of the Gloucester Foodbank, a campaign has been initiated to raise funds, seek donations, and recruit additional volunteers.
