In Denmark, the national postal service PostNord has announced plans to discontinue its letter delivery services by the end of 2025 due to a significant decline in mail volumes. The reduction has been attributed primarily to digitalization, with letter volumes dropping over 90% since 2000. PostNord’s workforce will also be reduced by a third, affecting approximately 2,200 positions, while new roles will be created in its parcel delivery sector.
Herman Moyano, a postal worker with PostNord, has noted changes in the type of mail being delivered, with fewer personal letters and an increase in bills. According to Kim Pedersen, the head of PostNord Denmark, Danes now receive an average of only one letter per month, reflecting broader trends in online shopping and communication.
Copenhagen resident Nikolaj Brøchner Andrès expressed a disconnect with traditional mail, stating he cannot remember the last time he sent a letter. Denmark’s digital landscape, characterized by a high level of online engagement, has led to a “digital by default” policy that facilitates electronic communication with the government. The cost of postage has also risen, further discouraging letter-sending.
As PostNord phases out letter services, 1,500 red post boxes are being removed from streets. Concerns have been raised regarding the impact on elderly residents in rural areas who may find it harder to access mailing services. Advocacy groups and trade unions have suggested that this demographic could experience declines in service quality.
Meanwhile, private company DAO is set to take over letter delivery in Denmark, claiming to reach rural areas effectively and improve service speed. While the transition reflects a wider trend in postal services across Europe and the United States, there remains a cultural value in physical mail for some, as expressed by residents who appreciate the personal touch of letters. As Denmark navigates this shift, the changing landscape of postal services may serve as an indicator for global trends in mail delivery.
