A trial initiative in the Borders has introduced a new power storage system aimed at making social housing more energy efficient. The project, involving eleven homes from the Scottish Borders Housing Association, is reported to potentially decrease energy bills by up to 85%.
The energy firm Knight PowerHub, responsible for installing the systems, claims these solar panels and batteries have an extended operational lifespan compared to previous models. Deputy First Minister Kate Forbes visited one of the homes, belonging to resident Muriel Allison, and noted Ms. Allison has already experienced a reduction in her energy costs.
If the pilot is successful in delivering the anticipated savings, there are plans for broader implementation in other regions. Knight PowerHub is also exploring the possibility of mass manufacturing the systems in southern Scotland. Founder Lawrence Fagg stated the initiative could have significant benefits for many households, particularly among pensioners and families.
The development of this system has taken five years, incorporating artificial intelligence to utilize time-dependent tariffs, which aim to minimize energy bills. Julia Mulloy, chief executive of the Scottish Borders Housing Association, described the project as innovative, emphasizing its focus on both technology and community well-being. The scheme also holds promise for reducing fuel poverty and carbon emissions in the area.
