Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi stated that India and China should see each other as “partners” instead of “adversaries or threats” during his two-day visit to New Delhi. This meeting marks the second interaction between Chinese and Indian foreign ministers since 2020, following serious clashes in the Galwan valley that significantly strained their diplomatic relations.
During his visit, Yi met with Indian Foreign Minister S. Jaishankar and expressed optimism about the current trajectory of their relationship, indicating a shift toward cooperation. Jaishankar acknowledged that both nations are looking to move beyond recent difficulties in their ties. The discussions covered a variety of bilateral matters, including trade, religious pilgrimages, and sharing river data.
On a notable agenda point, Yi also met with India’s National Security Advisor Ajit Doval to continue negotiations aimed at resolving the long-standing boundary dispute. Yi commented that stability at their border has been restored, reflecting a mutual interest in overcoming past setbacks.
Efforts to normalize relations, which began with an agreement on patrolling mechanisms in late 2022, have included China allowing Indian pilgrims to visit sites in Tibet, India resuming visa services for Chinese tourists, and discussions to facilitate border trade. Reports suggest that direct flights between India and China may also be reinstated.
Yi’s discussions are anticipated to facilitate Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s upcoming visit to China, where he will attend the Shanghai Cooperation Organisation summit and may engage in bilateral talks with President Xi Jinping.
This development occurs in the context of India’s increasingly complex relationship with the United States, following recent tariffs imposed by the U.S. on Indian imports. Jaishankar noted that global developments would be part of their discussions, emphasizing the need for a multipolar world order and stability in the global economy.
