Nvidia’s GeForce Now is set to receive a significant upgrade next month, coinciding with a collaborative initiative involving Nvidia, Discord, and Epic Games. This project aims to test the feasibility of instant game demos on Discord servers. The concept is designed to allow users to try games without the need to purchase, download, or create an account.
According to Andrew Fear, Nvidia’s product marketing director, users will be able to click a “try a game” button, link their Epic Games account, and quickly access games like Fortnite without any installations. A demonstration, shown in an Nvidia video, suggests that the Fortnite demo will be available as a 30-minute free trial.
While this proposal offers a more streamlined experience, the requirement of an Epic Games account raises questions about its overall simplicity. Additionally, it remains uncertain whether this demo feature will be available to the public beyond the Gamescom event. Nvidia has referred to this concept as a “technology announcement” rather than a confirmed feature, indicating that they hope to engage game publishers and developers who might be interested in incorporating it into their offerings.
This initiative recalls past efforts, such as Sony’s acquisition of Gaikai in 2012, which initially suggested the possibility of instant try-before-you-buy demos on the PlayStation 4. However, that promise was not realized, with historical insights revealing that publishers were often hesitant to adopt such features. Overall, the current collaboration among Nvidia, Discord, and Epic Games raises key questions about the future of game accessibility and publisher interest in supporting instant demo capabilities.
