Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky met with U.S. President Donald Trump at the White House on Monday to discuss potential steps to end the ongoing war in Ukraine. This meeting followed Trump’s recent summit with Russian President Vladimir Putin in Alaska, which did not result in a ceasefire. Some European leaders also adjusted their schedules to attend the talks.
Zelensky’s previous visit to the White House had faced challenges, including criticism for his remarks and attire by U.S. officials. In contrast, during this meeting, Zelensky adopted a warmer approach, expressing gratitude multiple times and donning a dark suit instead of his typical military wear. He humorously noted his outfit, which gained a positive reception from attendees.
In the discussions, Zelensky presented a letter from Ukrainian First Lady Olena Zelenska addressed to Melania Trump, indicating an effort to connect with the First Family amid ongoing diplomatic relations. Trump’s reference to a letter he delivered to Putin, addressing children’s well-being, further highlights the humanitarian concerns surrounding the conflict.
During the talks, Trump inquired about what Zelensky needed for Ukraine’s security, to which Zelensky responded that they require a comprehensive approach involving weapons, training, and intelligence support. Trump hinted at the possibility of providing security guarantees and indicated that Europe would play a crucial role in Ukraine’s defense.
While Trump suggested that these guarantees were discussed during his talks with Putin, questions remain about the specificity of such commitments. Observers noted that Ukraine and Europe would likely seek clarity on the extent of U.S. involvement.
Trump has also indicated a desire to arrange a trilateral meeting with Zelensky and Putin, stating that the timing of such a meeting is being considered. Zelensky, for his part, aims to demonstrate that Russia lacks genuine intentions for peace, especially given past Russian reluctance to meet.
