Grammarly has announced the launch of several AI agents designed to tackle specific writing challenges faced by both educators and students. These tools are aimed at assisting educators in identifying plagiarism and AI-generated content, while also providing students with resources to assess reader reactions to their work, obtain citation support, and even predict potential grades. The AI agents will be accessible through Grammarly’s new “AI-native writing surface” called Grammarly Docs, at no additional cost for users of both Grammarly Free and Pro versions.
Jenny Maxwell, Head of Grammarly for Education, remarked on the importance of equipping students with AI tools that support their learning rather than detract from it. According to Grammarly, these new agents are intended to act as partners, helping students improve their writing skills while preparing them for a workforce where proficiency with AI is becoming increasingly necessary.
A key feature is the AI grader agent, which can provide feedback based on course information and publicly available data about instructors. This agent offers tailored writing suggestions and estimates the potential grade of a submitted paper, allowing students to refine their work prior to submission. Other available agents include one that forecasts reader questions, an in-line proofreader, and a paraphrasing tool that adjusts writing style for diverse audiences. Additionally, a citation finder agent will generate correctly formatted citations, and an expert review agent will offer personalized, topic-specific feedback.
For educators, Grammarly has introduced tools to help in the evaluation process, including a plagiarism checker that scans extensive databases and published works for similarities, and an AI detector that assesses the likelihood of text being generated by a human or AI. Initially, these detection agents will be exclusive to Grammarly Pro users, with plans to make them available to Enterprise and Education users later this year, along with new tools to be announced in the future.
