Microsoft introduced a dark mode option in Windows 10 in 2016. However, many areas of the operating system still displayed a mix of both light and dark modes. Recently, a preview build of Windows 11 has added more dark-themed user interface elements.
Updates spotted by Windows observer Phantomofearth reveal new dark-themed file operation dialogs. These dialogs will now appear in dark mode for tasks such as copying or deleting files. Nevertheless, the prompts still feature light buttons rather than adopting a fully dark design, indicating that this is still a work in progress.
While Microsoft has yet to officially announce enhancements to the dark mode in Windows 11, these recent updates could suggest that a more comprehensive redesign is forthcoming, potentially in the 25H2 update scheduled for later this year. Notably, features such as the Control Panel, Run prompt, and file properties user interface remain in light mode, raising the question of whether Microsoft aims to address these components as well.
Historically, Microsoft took several years to implement a dark mode for File Explorer in Windows 10, even after the initial release of the operating system showed a mixture of themes. In contrast, Apple has offered a consistent dark mode in macOS since the introduction of macOS Mojave in 2018. Moreover, a new Liquid Glass redesign is expected from Apple later this year, which will emphasize transparency and refine the user experience.
