Google has announced that it will delay the replacement of Assistant with its new AI system, Gemini, on Android devices. Originally, the transition was planned for completion by the end of 2025, but the timeline has been extended to 2026. The company stated that this adjustment aims to ensure a smooth transition for users.
Once the transition to Gemini is finalized, users will lose access to Google Assistant on compatible devices and will not be able to download the Google Assistant app. The announcement reflects Google’s focus on delivering a seamless experience as users shift to the new system.
In 2023, Google began implementing features that lead towards this replacement, allowing users to perform tasks such as making phone calls, setting timers, and sending messages via Gemini even when the Gemini Apps Activity setting is disabled. This update enables users to access assistant-like features while opting out of having their interactions used for training the AI.
The changes underscore Google’s ongoing efforts to enhance its AI capabilities, as well as its commitment to improving user experience during this transition.
