Apple has announced updates to its iOS App Store in Japan to align with recent legislative changes. As part of these modifications, the company will enable third-party app stores and alternative payment processing options for users. However, Apple will implement new commission fees associated with these transactions.
Developers will now have the option to utilize alternative payment methods in their App Store applications or redirect users to external websites for purchases. Notably, Apple will maintain a commission rate of up to 21 percent for in-app purchases. Additionally, a 15 percent commission will be applied to digital goods purchased through linked websites.
To inform users about potential risks, Apple will introduce warnings when accessing third-party app stores or using alternative payment methods. Epic Games CEO Tim Sweeney referenced these warnings and the associated commission fees when stating that Fortnite will not return to iOS in Japan for the time being. This situation mirrors ongoing discussions in the United States, where Apple has faced scrutiny in an antitrust case involving Epic Games, including a recent unsuccessful appeal related to similar issues.
The changes in Japan may signal Apple’s broader strategy to adapt to regulatory pressures while maintaining its revenue model.
