In July, Sony filed a lawsuit against Tencent to halt the release of Light of Motiram, which Sony claimed was a “slavish clone” of its well-known Horizon series. The lawsuit has now been resolved, with both companies reaching a “confidential settlement” and the case being dismissed with prejudice, according to a court document filed recently.
Light of Motiram was announced last year, and its reveal trailer displayed significant similarities to the Horizon series, featuring vibrant landscapes, advanced technology, and animal-like robotic entities. Sony’s lawsuit contended that Tencent used an imitation of the Horizon protagonist, Aloy, as a key focus in its marketing and promotional activities.
Sony argued that Tencent’s actions constituted copyright and trademark infringement, pointing to the unlawful copying of protected audiovisual elements from its Horizon games. The lawsuit emphasized the need for immediate legal intervention to prevent potential harm to both Sony Interactive Entertainment and consumers.
In a statement, Sean Durkin, head of communications for Tencent Americas, noted that both companies were pleased to have achieved a confidential resolution and indicated that they would not provide further public comments on the issue. Durkin also mentioned that both Sony and Tencent look forward to collaborating in the future. Sony did not respond to requests for comment at the time of reporting.
