On Wednesday evening, OpenAI introduced an App Directory that allows users to explore available tools and opened its Software Development Kit (SDK) for developers to create new interactive experiences that integrate within the ChatGPT interface. The company’s CEO, Sam Altman, indicated last month that the development of essential features for a comprehensive platform would be pursued over time, with the launch of the app store marking a significant advancement in this direction.
In a related update, OpenAI has rebranded “connectors” that facilitate the retrieval of data from various services, such as Google Drive and Dropbox, now referring to them as apps. According to a support page, previously named chat connectors are now designated as “apps with file search,” while deep research connectors and synced connectors are termed “apps with deep research” and “apps with sync,” respectively. The updated system also clarifies that these apps may utilize information from Memory if enabled. Additionally, for Free, Plus, Go, and Pro ChatGPT users, OpenAI may employ user data for model training if the option to “improve the model for everyone” is activated.
To foster interactivity, users can access various ChatGPT apps, including those that launched in October for platforms like Spotify and Zillow. These apps are gradually becoming available in more regions, including Spotify, which is now functional in the UK, Switzerland, and across the EU. New offerings include an Apple Music app that assists users in finding music, creating playlists, and managing their music libraries directly through the chatbot. Another example is DoorDash, which can streamline meal planning and shopping based on recipe ideas.
However, OpenAI has not clarified how these developments will contribute to the profitability of its AI business. The announcement only mentioned ongoing explorations of monetization options, including digital goods, with plans to provide more information as user engagement evolves.
