A first interview with Mozilla’s new CEO on AI, Firefox, and the web

A first interview with Mozilla’s new CEO on AI, Firefox, and the web

Mozilla is navigating complexities with its dual structure consisting of a nonprofit organization and a for-profit subsidiary. Historically, these divisions have complemented each other, but recent challenges have prompted layoffs and restructuring efforts. Mozilla seeks to maintain its advocacy for a more open and private internet, despite relying on revenue largely from Google.

Anthony Enzor-DeMeo, recently appointed as CEO, emphasizes perceived opportunities amid these challenges. While Mozilla does not plan to create its own large language model (LLM), it intends to introduce an AI Mode in Firefox next year, allowing users to choose from various models, including open-source and private options. Enzor-DeMeo asserts that Mozilla’s position enables it to offer trustworthy solutions without promoting a single model.

Enzor-DeMeo joined Mozilla a year ago and played a significant role in developing the Firefox browser, a key product that supports the company’s values and generates primary revenue through its Google partnership. As he assumes leadership, the impact of AI on product markets becomes a pressing concern, especially in light of growing competition in the browser space.

He notes that building the best browser remains Mozilla’s top priority and acknowledges that future products will likely be tied to Firefox. Additionally, Enzor-DeMeo expresses concern over the shift towards paywalls, advocating for an open web supported by ad revenue.

To ensure long-term sustainability, he suggests diversifying Mozilla’s revenue sources beyond reliance on Google while maintaining a core focus on the browser. Strategies may include offerings like VPN services, alongside efforts to increase Firefox’s user base, aligning with the company’s ethos of user data control and privacy.
