Australian red-tipped bananas go viral as social media interest ramps up

Red-tipped bananas in Australia have gained increased attention on social media, particularly following a viral post by British backpackers Mel Chekaoui and Phil Colia. Their video, which has received over 11 million views on Instagram, sparked a surge of curiosity among consumers about the meaning behind the red wax tip.

The red tips were introduced by farmers Dianne and Frank Sciaccia in Far North Queensland, signifying bananas grown using an Ecoganic farming method, which aims to enhance soil health while minimizing chemical inputs. The couple explained that although the farming system is distinct from organic farming, it incorporates natural ecosystems to cultivate the crop.

The popularity of the red-tipped bananas has led to inquiries from other agricultural sectors, with potential partnerships being explored for avocados, apples, pears, and even papayas. William Darveniza, another grower, plans to start producing red-tipped pawpaw next year.

In terms of exports, around 80 tonnes of red-tipped bananas are produced weekly, with growing international interest, particularly from Japan. Ms. Sciaccia stated that they have been collaborating with a major Japanese supermarket to establish a business plan, aiming to send commercial volumes there in the near future.
