On Sunday night, three-year-old Ibrahim fell into an uncovered manhole, as shown in CCTV footage that has since circulated widely on social media. The footage, released on Wednesday, depicts Ibrahim leaving a departmental store with his mother, running towards his father near the motorcycle parking area before falling into the manhole. Despite attempts by his parents and bystanders to rescue him, the child was swept away by strong water currents.
After a 15-hour search, Ibrahim’s body was recovered from another manhole approximately 500 meters from the initial site. A second CCTV clip captured a dumper truck, allegedly belonging to a contractor working on a provincial government project, dislodging the manhole cover when it drove the wrong way on November 17. The footage indicated that the cover had been absent for nearly 13 days prior to the incident.
In light of the incident, the Sindh chief minister has directed an inquiry. Assistant Commissioner Gulshan-e-Iqbal, Syed Amir Ali, confirmed that the District East deputy commissioner would oversee the investigation.
- Why it matters: The incident raises concerns about public safety and the responsibilities of contractors in maintaining hazardous areas. It highlights the importance of infrastructure oversight and regulatory compliance.
- The latest: An inquiry committee has been appointed to investigate the circumstances surrounding the missing manhole cover and the involvement of the contractor.
