Netflix kills casting from phones

Netflix has updated its policy regarding the casting of shows and movies from mobile devices to TVs. According to an updated help page on Netflix’s website, the streaming platform no longer supports casting from most TVs and TV-streaming devices, unless users have older casting devices. Instead, it is recommended that subscribers use their TV remotes to navigate the Netflix interface.

This change appears to have been implemented in recent weeks, with reports from users indicating a lack of prior notice. For example, one user noted that casting support was removed on November 10th, while another found that casting was available on an older version of the Netflix app, but became unavailable after an update.

Although Netflix’s support page states that casting is still possible for users with older Chromecast devices or TVs that support Google Cast, this option is restricted to subscribers on more expensive ad-free plans, which begin at $17.99 per month. Subscribers on the ad-supported plan, priced at $7.99 per month, will not have casting capabilities, even if they own older Chromecast devices.

The announcement regarding the removal of casting features does not clarify the reasons behind this decision. It mirrors a previous change in 2019 when Netflix discontinued AirPlay support, citing concerns about meeting a quality standard for viewing experiences. Netflix has been contacted for further comment on the recent changes.
