A homeless charity in Cornwall, St Petrocs, has reported an unprecedented demand for its services, with 153 individuals accessing support in October 2025, marking a 35% increase compared to the same month in 2024. In September 2025, the charity also recorded its highest monthly figure, assisting 176 people sleeping rough. This rise in numbers is attributed in part to the ongoing cost of living crisis, which has been linked to increased homelessness.
To address the frigid conditions, St Petrocs is initiating its winter campaign earlier than usual, beginning a rapid rehoming program between November 2025 and February 2026. This program aims to provide necessary support during the winter months. Lois Wild, the charity’s director of engagement, noted the significant rise in people experiencing homelessness, stating that the current figures are alarming.
The challenges of homelessness can be particularly severe for vulnerable populations, such as women. One female service user, who chose to remain anonymous, expressed fear about sleeping rough, highlighting concerns for personal safety and the unpredictability of threats from others.
St Petrocs operates two community-based resource centers located in Truro and Penzance, which offer various services, including housing advice, access to healthcare, and basic amenities such as shower facilities, hot food, and clothing.
As the charity prepares for the winter months, questions arise regarding the long-term solutions to the increasing rates of homelessness and the shortage of affordable housing options.
