Lagos Police Probe Viral Video of Officer’s Assault

The Lagos State Police Command has initiated an investigation into a police officer featured in a viral video allegedly attempting to arrest a bus conductor in the Ikorodu area. The video, according to PUNCH Online, shows the officer in a camouflage uniform grappling with the partially undressed conductor inside a bus while passengers intervene with shouts of, “Leave this boy,” and the conductor exclaims, “Police, don kill me.”

In a statement, the command’s Public Relations Officer, SP Abimbola Adebisi, explained that the incident arose from an operation where officers and the Lagos State Traffic Management Authority were reportedly obstructed by a commercial bus driver and his conductor. The driver allegedly blocked traffic, creating significant difficulties for other road users.

Adebisi stated that during the arrest attempt, the conductor attempted to evade capture by stripping, leading to the chaotic scene captured in the video. The officer involved has been identified and is under investigation to assess the appropriateness of his conduct. The conductor has been contacted and is scheduled to meet with the Commissioner of Police on Monday for an interview. Additionally, the bus involved has been impounded and is in police custody.

Commissioner of Police, CP Olohundare Jimoh, called on Lagos residents to adhere to the law and report any police misconduct, asserting that justice will be served. He emphasized that resisting lawful arrest is a criminal offense and cautioned against dramatizing the incident.
