Christmas toy appeal starts for Hackney and Haringey children

Organizers of a Christmas toy appeal in north and east London are requesting donations to support their initiative aimed at providing gifts to children facing significant hardship. The 12th annual appeal, run by the Hackney Local Buyers Club, is concerned about potential declines in contributions due to rising financial pressures on households.

The appeal focuses on delivering new gifts to children residing in Hackney and Haringey, two of the most economically disadvantaged boroughs in England. Donations to this project also assist local independent businesses, as funds raised will be spent within the community.

Gifts from the appeal are typically distributed by local councils to children in care or those living in temporary accommodations. Jenna Fansa, co-founder of the Winter Toy Appeal, indicated that the initiative was founded to address the lack of Christmas presents for some children living in poverty. Since its inception, the appeal has provided approximately 37,000 gifts, averaging around 3,000 to 5,000 each year.

Fansa noted that while community support has historically been strong, this year’s appeal has experienced a slower start. She highlighted the necessity for increased contributions, as fewer donations may result in reaching fewer children. Specific items like craft sets, remote-controlled cars, soft toys, and Lego are particularly welcomed.

Additionally, co-founder Vicky Bibiris emphasized the goal of ensuring that every child receives a new toy on Christmas morning. She mentioned that even a small purchase can significantly impact a child’s experience during the holiday season.

The appeal offers several donation options, which include purchasing toys from an Amazon wishlist for delivery to Hackney Council, making financial contributions via a GoFundMe page, buying discounted toys from local retailers, or donating toys directly at the appeal’s storage hub. Funds from the GoFundMe campaign will support local businesses participating in the Buyers Club, reinforcing the community connection.
