Australian Prime Minister Anthony Albanese has married his partner, Jodie Haydon, making him the first sitting prime minister to do so. The wedding occurred in Canberra on Saturday afternoon, following the conclusion of the parliamentary year. Albanese stated, “We are absolutely delighted to share our love and commitment to spending our future lives together, in front of our family and closest friends.”
Albanese and Haydon became engaged on Valentine’s Day last year, with both the proposal and wedding reception held at The Lodge, the official residence of the prime minister. Leading up to the wedding, security concerns prompted the couple to keep their plans private. The ceremony included attendance by Ms. Haydon’s parents and Albanese’s son from his previous marriage. Notably, their dog, Toto, served as the ring bearer, and the couple exited to Stevie Wonder’s “Signed, Sealed, Delivered (I’m Yours).”
A video shared by the prime minister showcased the couple walking down the aisle, accompanied by confetti from guests. Several cabinet ministers were present at the ceremony. During the reception, the couple’s first dance was to Frank Sinatra’s “The Way You Look Tonight.” Custom-made beer cans featuring their engagement image were also part of the celebrations.
Following the wedding, Albanese and Haydon plan to honeymoon in Australia for a week. They first met at a business dinner in 2020, when Albanese was serving as the leader of the opposition. Additionally, Albanese made history by being the first prime minister engaged while in office.
