Wrexham AFC receives £18m from government despite Hollywood backing | Wrexham

Wrexham AFC has experienced significant growth in the English football leagues, largely attributed to its owners, Hollywood actors Ryan Reynolds and Rob McElhenney. In addition to their investment, the club has received nearly £18 million in nonrepayable grants from the Welsh government through the local council, marking the highest direct aid for any football club in the UK.

The funding was linked to a £25 million Welsh government grant aimed at revitalizing the area surrounding the Wrexham General train station near the club’s stadium, the Racecourse Ground. Although local authorities initially referred to a “substantial amount” going to the club, the specifics of the financial support were not fully disclosed.

The club’s ownership transition completed in 2021 and has drawn attention through its documentary series, “Welcome to Wrexham,” which has reportedly attracted substantial viewership. While Wrexham AFC does not receive revenue directly from the series, associated companies operated by the owners are believed to profit from various production contracts.

Furthermore, Wrexham has secured sponsorship deals with notable brands which may enhance its market position. Football finance expert Stefan Borson commented on the implications of the £18 million grant for a club with wealthy owners, questioning the justification for such public funding at a time when local schools face budgetary constraints.

The Welsh government also acquired adjacent land to facilitate stadium redevelopment. While authorities emphasize the potential economic uplift and increased local job creation, there remains scrutiny regarding the prioritization of funding for a privately-owned football club amid broader fiscal pressures.

The Welsh government noted that this assistance is intended to help the club meet international standards, thereby allowing the return of competitive matches to the historic stadium. The financial assistance to Wrexham significantly outpaces support given to other football clubs, raising questions about equity and resource allocation within the sector.
